An old Tumblr post appeared on my Pinterest dash today. "If you ever feel bad about yourself, just remember that if you were a fictional character people would probably love you for all your flaws and quirks and mannerism that you probably hate so just remember that okay ilu"
I may have seen the post before but honestly, as a writer, who struggles with a sense of self, anxiety, depression, and body image, this was probably one of the most uplifting reminders. Because it's true. I drop pieces of myself and others into my characters, and my characters are so incredibly important to me, so loved. And here's my addition to what that OP said:
If you ever feel bad about yourself, just remember that there is a writer out there who has found inspiration in you.
My characters and my stories may be fiction - but everything is rooted in something I have, experienced, or a person who has inspired me. I have an entire novel based on a two-second interaction on a train, and a character based on a twelve-second interaction with a cashier at a teeny, tiny grocery store.
You are an inspiration. You are living a story...and you are not fiction. You are here. You are real. And we see you.
